Peptide names, sequences and PubChem CIDs explained

One peptide can be described by several identifiers. A catalogue name helps people find the record, a sequence describes an amino-acid order, and a PubChem CID points to a specific compound record. These fields are related, but they are not substitutes for one another.

Product name and compound name answer different questions

The product name is the label used to organize a catalogue. The compound name identifies the material represented by that listing. They can be identical, but a store name, abbreviation or established shorthand may differ from the more specific compound identity.

When the names differ, both should remain visible. Hiding the compound identity behind an abbreviation makes a record harder to compare with source databases and laboratory documents.

Alternate names improve discovery, not certainty

Alternate names can include spacing variations, abbreviations and other names found in public records. They help a catalogue search recognize that different queries may refer to the same listing.

An alternate name is not enough to prove that two records describe the same exact material form. The surrounding identity fields still matter, especially when salts, complexes, terminal modifications or other distinctions are possible.

A sequence records amino-acid order

A one-letter peptide sequence records the amino-acid order in a compact form. A display sequence can spell out residues and show confirmed terminal or residue modifications more clearly. The two forms should agree, while the expanded display may carry information that a plain one-letter sequence cannot express.

Sequence length can be counted from the represented residues, but the sequence alone does not establish the supplied material form, amount, identity of a physical vial or any laboratory result. Those belong to separate catalogue and document fields.

A PubChem CID points to a compound record

PubChem organizes contributed substance records and derives Compound records for unique chemical structures. A Compound ID, or CID, is the numeric identifier for one of those derived records.

A CID is useful only when the catalogue identity matches the specific PubChem structure. If public records distinguish a generic compound from a salt, charged form or complex, choosing the nearest-looking CID can be less accurate than publishing no CID at all.

Identifiers do not replace product documentation

A name, sequence or database identifier helps describe what a record is intended to represent. It does not establish the contents of a particular item, a reported analytical value or coverage for an unlisted format.

That is why catalogue identity and product documents appear as separate sections. The identity fields help compare records; the document section shows whether a public source is associated with the product or exact format.

Conflicting identifiers should remain unresolved

Public sources can disagree because they describe different structures, use different naming conventions or preserve records submitted by different contributors. A catalogue should not force those records together simply because their common names look alike.

The safer approach is to publish only the identifier supported by the exact represented identity. If the structure, charge, complex or modification cannot be matched confidently, leaving the identifier blank is more informative than attaching a precise-looking number to the wrong record.

A practical identity check

When comparing a catalogue record with a public database or report, work from the most specific confirmed facts and leave uncertain fields empty.

  • Compare the displayed product and compound names
  • Check alternate names only as discovery aids
  • Compare the compact and expanded sequences when both are present
  • Confirm that a PubChem CID names the exact structure represented
  • Keep amount, SKU and document scope separate from identity fields
